DLD Update

To be honest: I got a bit tired of blogging towards the end of the conference. But Kolja and me are working on a wrap-up that mentions all the interesting panels and projects with links and videos. Check back soon (or subscribe to my RSS feed) for that…

DLD 08 2nd Day

Posted in English, Live Blog by SEMIR on the January 21st, 2008

We did a smooth start this morning as we were totally exhausted yesterday. So we are now, after some interesting thoughts that investors shared with us, looking forward to hear something about Markets of Mobility.

Here’s the basic points of René Obermann’s keynote speech:

From Pioneer to Defender

The next step: mobile services catching up with fixed line broadband solutions
Voice -> text -> rich media
He believes in the increasing value of ‘digital furniture’ through storing of content (like music from iTunes)…
He says that there is no technical/logical reason for people to go home for receiving a message
Mobile internet is not yet here…
There’s no limit on the ‘need for speed’ of internet connections
The role of Telekom is not content production but content management

[12am]
Discussion starts…

Viviane Reding talks about access to technology and how to provide it to as many people as possible.

Viviane Reding says the next move in creating complete mobility is on the carriers. They should drop the prices for data services and roaming. The audience applauds (of course) while René Obermann makes an unheard comment.

DLD08 UPLOADING THE 21st CENTURY

After getting up at some ungodly time this morning we finally arrived in Munich. Lufthansa didn’t refresh us with a sandwich so we had do get lunch before proceeding to the conference center. Let’s see if DLD really has that much in stock as we expect it to. 30 minutes to go before the conference will start.

“We are all friends!” Beautiful, it’s sooo great to be here. Honestly it really is, but the opening speech is something that you should certainly consider not attend. It’s awful and embarrassing. Let’s move on to the interesting stuff. Stephanie and Marcel… let’s get it on!

[3pm]
By the way, find the official live blog here: http://www.dld-conference.com/weblog/

Now starting: Smart boys on new markets Let’s see how smart they are. ;)

[3.55pm]
Yes, they’re smart. Hubert Burda says: The key is in technology. And Europe lacks the speed and ability to attract excellent people from all over the world.

All the speakers made interesting remarks but it’s still all very general. So I am looking forward to the next sessions.

[4.50pm]
First personal highlight for today: Tyler Brulé interviewing Martha Stewart.
Wow… she has an iPhone of course and a n enourmus Nikon camera. What else is in her suitcase? A Kindle, Sony Vaio, a million chargers.

She talks about her work, and drops a lot of brand names. What product she uses for what task and how great they are. See her blog if you wanna know more: http://blogs1.marthastewart.com/martha/

So Martha Stewart was a bit spooky, Paolo Coelho was nice and interesting… and my battery was down. Meaning: No more writing for that day… ;)

Oh, and Tyler Brulé went from highlight to disappointment of the day. The only highlight in the talk was Martha Stewart talking about Tyler’s great Monocle and “his other magazine”! (Meaning of course Wallpaper magazine…)
Quote of the day goes to Martha! -End-

America’s Best

Posted in English, NYC by SEMIR on the January 17th, 2008

Fellow Americans,

some of the best fun of my first stay in your country I probably had in your shopping facilities.

Example #1: Obviously the U.S. are a country of plenty. You got ‘em SUVs and huge buildings and fridges and you wouldn’t bother to switch off the lights when leaving your apartment. Also, a good dish is either deep-fried or comes with large amounts of cheese or butter. I grant you the grease, dear Americans but this is just too much:

I mean, who in the world needs butter on green salad? Is this too healthy without loads of fat? Anyway, here comes example #2: Hopefully not even Americans will try to eat this although it’s certainly greasy enough.

No offense. I guess Germans are - especially thanks to some Bavarians - not really known for their fat free cuisine and slight build. Some more on Bavarian cuisine can be found here.

This post is dedicated to the staff of CVS in Hoboken, New Jersey.
I still got no CVS card but I love you guys anyway and I miss seeing you every night!

As seen on TV
